When someone nearby searches for what you offer, Google shows a map and a short list of businesses. Those few businesses get the calls, the direction requests, and the walk-ins. Everyone below them gets almost nothing.

Google picks that list on three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how completely and accurately your profile describes what you actually do. Distance you can't change. Prominence is everything Google has learned about your business from reviews, from your website, and from the rest of the web.
